Facebook announced on Friday that Messenger now offers end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls.
At the moment, this update is not available for group chats on Messenger. However, the company is currently testing these features and will roll it out once it is ready. Also, it is testing E2EE on Instagram direct messages in a bid to make it more secure as well. What’s more? There is an update to Messenger’s disappearing messages feature. This update gives people more options – between 5 seconds and 24 hours – on when their messages will disappear.
While the application has had E2EE since 2016, it was only available for one-to-one texts. However, with users making over 150 million calls on Messenger daily, Facebook deemed it necessary to add E2EE for them, too. With E2EE, users can enjoy more security and privacy. This is because E2EE prevents a third-party, like security agencies and Facebook itself, from accessing users’ texts and calls.
